Well, that sucked!

After Ozzy’s eerily familiar implosion last week (which was almost a carbon copy of his blindside in S16: Micronesia – also while holding an Idol), there wasn’t really much worth investigating in my rewatch. But there were two nuggets worth mentioning in this week’s intro. In a secret scene, when the two groups headed for separate camps, both were given a jar of rice and a pot. Jonathan took full advantage of this, helping himself to a scoop full of rice every time he showed up. He even told both camps he was doing it. The players were helpless to even vent about his rice hoarding since Jonathan held so much power. But the cockiness he showed could come back to hurt him. Emily and Devens talked about how much they wished they could vote Jonathan out, Devens even sarcastically calling Jonathan the “King of the World.” Ozzy also commented on Jonathan’s greed as he happily ate some of their rice every time he entered their camp too. Jonathan sent two jurors out of the game resenting him. That’s a bad look.

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 12)

In yet another example of how volatile the top of the leaderboard has been this season, this week has us say goodbye to not just one, but both of the Top 2 confessionalists among remaining players going into this episode. Rick’s confessional time run this season was incredibly steady, never really having a notable low point other than the zero he got in the Zac Brown episode. Cirie had a slightly different confessional time journey this season, with a somewhat muted run for the first half of the season before really amping up around the middle of the merge. Both players exit the game with over 15 minutes of total confessional time, which none of our Final 5 have yet.

Season 50 confessional counts through Episode 12

Every Thursday following the #Survivor episode I post confessional counts! I created the ‘Edit’ metric (shown in the last column) to compare how many confessionals each player received vs. how many they would have received if confessionals were distributed evenly in each episode. Players in episode 12 should have 45.1 confessionals if they were distributed evenly. Any percentage above 0% means a player was over-edited and anything below 0% means they were under-edited.

Unable to get out of one's own way

Episode 11 of Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans featured not one, but TWO people leaving the game mainly because they made mistakes that they were unable to recover from: (1) Ozzy sloppily trying to win favor with Aubry, who he was 100% sure was heading to the jury, so sure in fact that he declined to play his idol, which was the necessary step in sending her to the jury, and (2) Emily, who was simply a victim of numbers, but was in that situation because earlier she'd been a bit too forthcoming (also a problem on Day 1 of her first season), which made everyone else hesitant to work with her. Both did a bit too much, and ended up forgetting some basic game rules.

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 11)

We lose two original Cila members in one episode tonight, and because of how frequently they went to tribal council pre-merge, they both exit the game with strong confessional time totals. Emily had quieted significantly when the merge started, but she gets a standard example of a boot episode spike, receiving more confessional time this episode than in her last three episodes combined and her biggest episode since episode 3. But despite crossing the 10 minute mark on her way out the game, her total pales in comparison to our second boot Ozzy, who becomes the second player this season to get eliminated after leading the confessional time leaderboard among remaining players as of the previous episode. He gets his fourth episode this season with over 2 minutes of confessional time, helping him finish only about a minute behind our overall season leader so far, Christian.

Episode 10 - Dopamine rush

This episode would’ve been a 10/10 if not for Jeff gaslighting the audience into thinking everything great about it was all thanks to MrBeast. Beast himself was surprisingly chill and let the players remain in the spotlight, but Jeff just can’t help himself when it comes to ruining his own show. The auction was fun, the pre-tribal council was chaotic, the live tribal was exhilarating – I don’t think any of that had much to do with the MrBeast “Super” Beware Advantage. The players didn’t know what it was, so they literally proposed at camp to play as if it didn’t exist. But NO! According to Jeff, all the entertainment was thanks to MrBeast and his visit to their “little show.”

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 10)

We get a very quiet exit from Stephenie this week, as she becomes the first player this season to receive less than 30 seconds of confessional time in her elimination episode. To find a player with a quieter boot episode, we have to go all the way back to Tim in season 46, who received just 22 seconds in the season’s split tribal episode. Looking at Stephenie’s confessional time overall, she finishes the season with a fairly respectable 7:54, although nearly 40% of that total came from just one episode when she went on a solo journey.

Coin flip

Ok, the Jimmy Fallon “One in the Urn” twist sucked. Any twist that forces a player to vote for themselves is just plain stupid. The downside of this twist overwhelmingly outweighed the upside of merely getting an Extra Vote. But let’s be real. The Jimmy Fallon twist is NOT why Christian got voted out. I’m of the firm belief that 90% of players who get voted out did something to contribute to their own demise. Christian made a few mistakes long before he got on the boat.

Sophomore report card

The most pure test of a Survivor player is as a rookie playing against an all-rookie cast. Survivor was originally intended to be played by complete strangers testing their social and strategic skills on completely level playing field. But the second-best test of a Survivor player is in a cast of all-returning players. I always find it interesting to see what kind of adjustments players make the second time around. Do they know what went right or wrong the first time? Does a returning winner know what mistakes they got away with the first time? Are they better able to handle Probst’s questioning? Can they take advantage of knowing the mechanics of the Production crew like paying closer attention to whatever the cameras spend extra time filming, knowing what it means when some players are pulled away for more confessionals than others?

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 9)

We get a major shake-up on the leaderboard this week, as we suddenly say goodbye to the player who’s been atop the leaderboard for a vast majority of this season so far. Christian was far and away the biggest confessionalist of the pre-merge, serving as the key narrator for all five pre-merge tribal councils he attended. After the Blood Moon, though, his confessional time suddenly experienced a very noticeable cooldown, which some people (correctly) predicted as a sign that he might not last as long in the game as his pre-merge dominance suggested. Nevertheless, he gets his biggest episode of the season on his way out, causing him to finish with more than double the total confessional time of any eliminated player so far.

Like the Blood Moon two weeks ago, our latest multi-elimination episode sends out players from opposite ends of the confessional time leaderboard. In the top half, we lose Coach, whose 9:06 is the biggest confessional time total for an eliminated player so far (although perhaps not quite as big as some might have expected from such a bombastic character). On the other end, we say goodbye to Chrissy, who had fallen into last place on the leaderboard last week. Her 3:41 is the second smallest confessional time total for a jury member since the show switched to 90 minute episodes - in a very strange coincidence, the only juror in a 90-minute season with a smaller total was also a Chrissy, with the season 48 player receiving 3:05.

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 7)

We start our jury this season with former winner Dee, who ends a consistent but not particularly remarkable confessional time run. Although she was the only woman on original Kalo to receive at least some confessional time in every episode, she had a pretty muted presence throughout the pre-merge. Once the merge hit, it looked like her confessional time was showing signs of picking up, but it was too little too late for her as she exits the game just one episode after having her biggest confessional episode of the season.

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 6)

Our historic triple elimination this week leads us to say goodbye to two players with very similar confessional runs and a third who had a drastically different experience. On the one end, Colby and Kamilla were both firmly in the bottom half of the confessional time leaderboard as of last week. While each of them had one episode where they got a spike in confessional time (Colby in the premiere and Kamilla last week), they both otherwise were fairly quiet during their time on the show, causing them to exit the game with almost identical confessional time totals. On the other end, we also lose one of the biggest confessionalists of the pre-merge in Genevieve, who was the only player this season other than Christian to receive over a minute of time in at least four pre-merge episodes. She gets another one of those episodes on her way out the game this week, resulting in her being the biggest confessionalist among the entire pre-jury.

Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 5)

After three episodes in a row of the eliminated player being in the top half of the confessional time leaderboard as of their previous episode, the season finally starts to cull some of the players in the bottom half. Neither Angelina nor Charlie were really able to get a footing in confessional time in this very crowded pre-merge. While the Charlie vs. Rizo storyline that emerged in the last few episodes boosted Charlie’s confessional time ever so slightly, he never had a breakout episode. Meanwhile, despite going to three tribal councils in a row, Angelina just couldn’t shake her nearly invisible first two episodes of the season and ended up as one of the quieter players on her swapped tribe.

Who Will Win ‘Survivor 50’? Our Predictions So Far

Ideally, a Survivor season is incredibly hard to predict. Whether it’s a litany of advantages, dynamic players, or chaotic personalities, some of the best seasons of the iconic CBS series have been full of shocks and surprises each and every week. And we can expect no less from Season 50, considering not only the superstar-packed returning player cast, as well as how much of the structure of the game has been left “in the hands of the fans.”

After the buffs were dropped and the dust settled, some players took the opportunity to make long-awaited connections, while others questioned the relationships they had up to this point.

It was enough to scare them away from targeting her number one, Rizo Velovic, and it helped pave the way for the two of them to do the impossible and make it to the end. Who would have thought, less than a month later, that not only would Savannah make a return appearance on Survivor 50, but arguably another secret advantage would prove to be the nail in her coffin rather than her saving grace.

Kyle Fraser Reveals He Argued with Jeff Probst After Devastating ‘Survivor 50’ Injury: ‘I’ll Sign a Waiver!’ (Exclusive)

Kyle Fraser stood on the bottom of a near-vertical wall on Day 3 of Survivor 50. But his position in terms of topography was far from a reflection of his position in the game. On paper, Kyle was coming into his second season with all eyes on him. At the time, the entire cast had seen him take home a million dollars just a couple of weeks prior. Not only that, but two of his closest allies, Kamilla Karthigesu and Joe Hunter, were also returning alongside him. It had all the makings of an open-and-shut-case for the lawyer to get taken out quickly, especially as the only winner on his tribe.

Jeff Probst Breaks Down the ‘Survivor 50’ Premiere — From Kyle’s Scary Injury to a Negotiation You Didn’t See (Exclusive)

Survivor 50 established from the jump that it is not playing around. Within minutes of the 24 players arriving in the game, they were told that they would be given no rice, and they had to compete to earn their basic supplies. That competition turned into the surprising return of Exile Island, which had Q Burdette and Ozzy Lusth forced to spend the entire first day of the season away from their tribe. The first Immunity Challenge spotlighted individual accountability, as six-time player Cirie Fields wilted with every doomed throw of the monkey’s fist. But the person most hampered by the afternoon was Kyle Fraser, who ended up rupturing his Achilles tendon trying to get up a wall.
